History
The story of
Hyde Park
Developed in the 1880s by railroad magnate Henry B. Plant, Hyde Park was Tampa's first planned residential community. Plant built the Tampa Bay Hotel (now the University of Tampa) across the Hillsborough River and envisioned Hyde Park as a neighborhood for the city's growing professional class. The neighborhood's grid was laid out with wide, tree-lined streets modeled after northeastern cities. By the early 20th century it was home to Tampa's business leaders, politicians, and civic institutions. After a period of decline mid-century, a preservation movement in the 1970s and 80s restored many of its original homes, and the neighborhood has remained a centerpiece of Tampa living ever since.
