History
The story of
Davis Islands
Developer D.P. Davis created the islands in the 1920s by dredging Hillsborough Bay, transforming two small mud flats into 875 acres of buildable land. The project was one of the most ambitious land developments in Florida history. Davis sold $18 million in lots on the first day of sales — many to buyers who arrived by boat. The islands were built out with Mediterranean Revival and Art Deco homes during the late 1920s and 30s. Davis himself disappeared mysteriously from an ocean liner in 1926, but his islands endured. Today they remain one of Tampa's most tightly knit communities.
