History
The story of
Downtown Tampa
Tampa's downtown dates to the 1880s when Henry B. Plant's railroad arrived, turning the small Gulf Coast town into a transportation hub. The cigar industry brought waves of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants to nearby Ybor City, and downtown became the commercial center. The area experienced suburban flight in the latter half of the 20th century, but a sustained revitalization effort beginning in the 2000s — anchored by the Riverwalk, Amalie Arena, and the $3.5 billion Water Street Tampa development by Jeff Vinik — has transformed it into one of the most livable downtowns in the Southeast.
