History
The story of
Temple Terrace
Temple Terrace was founded in the 1920s as a Mediterranean-style residential community centered around a golf course and citrus groves. The city's name comes from the Moorish temple-like architecture of its original buildings and the terraced hillsides along the Hillsborough River. It was one of Florida's earliest planned communities, designed with curving streets that followed the natural terrain — a departure from the rigid grids of most Florida developments. The arrival of the University of South Florida in 1956 brought growth and diversity to the area. Today Temple Terrace maintains its distinct identity as a small city within the greater Tampa metro.
