History
The story of
Lakeland
Lakeland was founded in the 1880s by Abraham Munn, a Louisville businessman drawn by the area's abundance of lakes. The city grew as a center for the Florida citrus industry and became a winter training ground for Major League Baseball — the Detroit Tigers trained here from 1934 to 1998. Florida Southern College commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design an entire campus in the 1930s and 40s, producing 13 structures that remain architectural landmarks. After decades as a quiet citrus town, Lakeland has experienced a renaissance driven by downtown revitalization, craft food and drink, and its strategic location halfway between Tampa and Orlando.
