History

The story of
Clearwater

Clearwater was incorporated in 1915 and grew as a resort destination through the early 20th century. The Belleview Biltmore Hotel (1897) put the area on the map as a winter retreat for wealthy northerners. The construction of the Memorial Causeway in 1926 connected the mainland to Clearwater Beach and accelerated development on the barrier island. The city has maintained its identity as a beach destination while growing into a full-fledged city with diverse neighborhoods. Recent years have seen significant investment in downtown Clearwater, with new residential towers, restaurants, and cultural venues transforming the urban core.
