History
The story of
Brandon
Brandon is named after John Brandon, who settled the area in the 1850s. It remained a small agricultural community through the mid-20th century, known primarily for citrus groves and cattle ranching. The construction of I-75 in the 1960s transformed Brandon into a bedroom community for Tampa. The Westfield Brandon mall (opened 1975) accelerated commercial development, and the area grew rapidly through the 1980s and 90s. Today Brandon is one of the largest census-designated places in Florida, home to over 115,000 residents, with a mix of established neighborhoods and newer developments.
